flashing headlights....don't

Something for the attention of Brits particularly...DO NOT flash your lights if you see a car at night which does not have its lights on. In the UK we would do this but someone advised us about this when we moved here 4 years ago.

Gangs tend to use this as part of an initiation thing...they will drive at night in order to try to get a driver to flash their lights....they then follow that driver and will have no hesitation in shooting that person---if successful, they are initiated into the gang.

Unfortunately this is absolutely true so keep it in mind. You may be lucky but there again you may not.I have never seen anyone flash their lights so keep it that way.

Andytown- I can%26#39;t help but be curious where you found this information, as it is commonly reported to be an Internet hoax by more than a dozen websites such as this one:

consumerfraudreporting.org/emailhoaxes_DontF鈥?/a>

and also by Trend Microsystems which tracks Internet hoaxes. Did you receive this as an e-mail? Part of the hoax is that people are told to forward the e-mail to everyone they know.

You might want to check into it before continuing to report it.

This is not true in Bradenton. Gangs here will target rival gangs, but really have nothing to do with innocent bystanders. Flashing your lights at cars without lights is a common courtesy, alerting them to danger.

In reply to Lulu, I did not receive the info by e-mail. We were told about it when we moved here from England, but it was reinforced only recently by someone who works with my wife...suffice it to say that this persons partner is of dubious character.

The gangs in Bradenton(and pretty much everywhere else) obviously target rival gangs...that%26#39;s what it%26#39;s all about.Initiation into a gang requires some kind of nasty task though(to show loyalty)

I never ,ever see anyone flashing their lights here so I, for one, will not do it....just in case.

This is absolutely NOT true. It%26#39;s been covered in Tampa Bay-area newspapers for more than 20 years, and it%26#39;s a piece of fiction that just refuses to die.

It%26#39;s also extensively covered in snopes. I%26#39;ve lived here for 22 years, and regularly flash headlights at dark cars. Luckily, the problem is not as bad as it once was, with daytime running lights and more automatic headlights.

OK....I give in. Hard to know who to believe sometimes. I%26#39;m still not going to flash my lights though. The story must have started for a reason.
