Hello, We were wondering how long it would be to Key West from Fort Myers Beach. We will be looking to go April 21,2009. Would a day trip be worth it or should we wait to go another year and stay there? Thanks! :)
Key West day trip
The best way to get to Key West from FMB is the Key West Express. It takes about 3 1/2 hours. I%26#39;ve taken the boat three times now and have been very impressed. It%26#39;s nice to stay for the day, but overnight is even better.

The boat leaves out of Salty Sam%26#39;s Marina which is about a 5 minute drive from Estero Blved.
Driving would take about 7-8 hours down through Miami and then Highway 1.
Hope this helps!!!
Key West day trip
Oh wow..a day trip is OK but you will not have a great lot of time in Key West. The ferry, as stated, is about a 3 1/2 hour trip to Key West. Don%26#39;t think I could recommend staying in Key West though...stay in one of the upper Keys (Islamorada is a good place) and do day trips to Key West, stay for the sunset and then head back away from all of the chaos and experience the other side of the Keys. It is a beautiful (long) drive....not for a day!
I don%26#39;t think it is worth a day trip. If you take the Key West Express, you leave around 9 AM and get there 12:30 or 1, then need to be back on the boat before 5 PM, so you don%26#39;t have much time in Key West. Better to take the boat down and spend at least one night.
We take the boat, pack our overnight things in one or two backpacks, and reserve a room within walking distance of the dock. There are a zillion options in all price ranges.
Driving from FMB to Key West will take you about 8 hours. Definitely not a day trip.
stay a night or two in the keys. you will regret it if you dont. we have used the ferry and driven down. the ferry is much quicker but if you have the time to drive it is beautiful. go through the everglades it%26#39;s great
I agree with Karen, take a few days and drive down. Personally, I think the drive is awesome! Key West has lots of Bed %26amp; Breakfasts (just google %26#39;em). When you see what they have to offer you won%26#39;t want to stay in a chain hotel or regular motel. I%26#39;ve often been tempted to take the ferry but there%26#39;s no way I could get back on after only a few hours in Key West. Just can%26#39;t be done IMHO.
