College Trip to University of Miami

My son and I are heading down to do do the college tour but will have 2 or 3 more days to explore Miami. How difficult is the commute between Sobe and Coral Gables? Any place in particular we should be sure to see to evaluate Miami as a potential college destination? All advice welcome! Thank you!

It%26#39;s not hard to drive between South Beach and the Gables if you skip rush hour times. Say 20 min. But I think to get the sense of UM, you might want to say in the Gable area. As a freshman, he%26#39;s probably going to be living on campus without a car so you%26#39;ll want to see what the local area is like. He%26#39;ll spend time away from class at the places along US 1 (which parallels one side of the school). The Cereal Bowl may become his favorite hangout - -they serve cereal with mix-ins!

The drive is easy as pie: South on US-1 to Coral Gables. About a half mile past the Fire house on the right, look for the towers of the two residential dorms %26amp; just past them is one of the main entrances to the campus. On the West side of US-1 across from the campus extending down to the City of South Miami, just south of the campus is an upscale shopping, club %26amp; restaurant area that is sort of the center of ';town life'; for the residential students.

As a regular ';commute'; from SoBe I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it. [I actually did commute to U of M from SoBe many years ago when gas was 30 cents a gallon] With modern day traffic it takes about an hour for the drive %26amp; public transport will involve a slow-bus to train transfer. Commuting from desirable residential areas elsewhere in Miami, such as Brickell or Kendall is easy %26amp; cheap, as there is a Metro-Rail stop right off campus %26amp; students are entitled to a monthly pass usable on the rail %26amp; all buses.
