Just returned from beautiful Sanibel and wanted to remind people who are planning on going that if you pick up shells and there is a living ';thing'; inside the shell, throw it back into the ocean. Live shelling is prohibited and the fines are $500 if you are caught. It is not worth it, there are plenty of shells that do not have live things in them.
I witnessed a few people picking up huge shells and pulling the live stuff out....not cool to do and if I had a badge I would have fined them! :)
Live Shelling Prohibited ReminderWhen I see and hear this type of thing it makes me so angry what a dishonorable way to treat other living things! Thanks for posting such an important reminder!
Live Shelling Prohibited ReminderThere is a number to call. It%26#39;s 239-472-3111. It%26#39;s the Sanibel Police Dept. non emergency number.
Thanks for the info that you really can call the police- when I get back to Sanibel I will make sure to have this with me...I remember watching people taking live shells on Jekyll Island GA a few years ago (with my son who was 9-10) and no one we reported it do did anything despite signs being posted everywhere.
Thanks, Great idea. Yuck - who would do that?
Actually,don%26#39;t throw it.Place it gently down in deeper water.A park ranger in Bonita springs reminded me of that.Would you want to be tossed out, suddenly, into deep water?
Several years back, I saw this happen. People were taking live starfish, sand dollars, you name it. The police were called, and they showed up in force, too! *thumbs up to the Sanibel police*
