Salute now Blue Heaven

Salute has always had a tough time I think, largely due to its somewhat remote location on Higgs Beach. They really have had good food in the past. BH might be able to rejuvenate it.

They%26#39;ll need help in clearing out the uh.... Folks with undeveloped potential and less-then-stellar personal grooming habits in order to help attract the clientele. It is out of the way and often slips people%26#39;s minds because of it. I wish them all the good luck in the world. Taking on a new endevouer in this economy requires solid gold gonads and more than a heaping sprinkle of fairy dust.

The fact that it%26#39;s out of the way is why I enjoy it...a respite. They%26#39;ve trained the bums to stay away from the building but they still inhabit the parking lot. The outdoor tables closest to the beach remind me of other places than KW, and it%26#39;s a nice little escape. They also have caipirinhas, half price when it%26#39;s raining.

I have never been a big fan of the food but the view is nice when they can keep the bums away.

I think that place has tons of potential. I can%26#39;t wait to see what improvements they make with the food. Being out of the Old Town area is going to make it more difficult, but if the food is good, people will find it. I wish them the very best!

As you all know, I am big friends with pretty much anyone even remotely connected with Blue Heaven, so when Richard %26amp; Suanne bought Salute I was stoked. Partly because the location is so off-the-beaten path yet accessible, partly because Blue Heaven is so cool and I want another place that is that flavorful, partly because Salute had yet to live up to its potential, and partly because its at such a great beach! (That%26#39;s right, four parts.)

Many may have forgotten or be unaware but that beach - Higgs Beach - used to be a great spot for everyone to hang out. Something happened a few years ago, and then all of sudden many street people kind of took over the little concrete pavilions. So I am looking forward to having those back. It was one thing to share, it%26#39;s another to have imposed a claim to a community resource.

As for Salute itself, here%26#39;s what%26#39;s happened so far. The place got washed from top-to-bottom. I think the last time it had been seriously cleaned was pre-Wilma. And I am not kidding. Fresh paint has been applied generously upon the parts and places which demanded, a process which continues. And new art. And lighting.

The menu has changed already, too. All the pre-fab stuff went out, and fresh stuff brought in. Vegetables, oils, spices, breads, the works. And the wine menu has been revamped. And all the seafood is fresh now, and mostly local (where possible).

The idea was not to create a new restaurant but to make a great one out of the one that is already in place. Most of the same employees are there implementing techniques which have proven successful at Blue Heaven. It%26#39;s a whole different vibe, though. Very locals friendly, partially because of the location. (I mean, off-the-beaten path, AND dinner beach-side...what%26#39;s not to like?) The food is about one-hundred and fifty thousands times better now.

It%26#39;s kind of like an Italian Cheers. On a beach. In the Caribbean.

Personally, I am SO looking forward to hanging out there in the summer. There is a beach volley ball court right behind the restaurant! With bandstands for live music! AWESOME!!

And that%26#39;s my take on it.

Good info, Mike. Like some of the other locals pointed out, they are going to have to get rid of the bums hanging out at Higgs Beach and in the parking lot if they want to succeed. It%26#39;s a nice location, but just being on Keys TV (the hotel channel) isn%26#39;t going to bring in the customers. Higgs has gotten a somewhat bad reputation over the past few years because of the homeless people hassling the tourists.

Salute was a fave of ours when there, even if you couldn%26#39;t get near the bandstand because of the great unwashed sleeping there.

I wish them all the success in the world, the view can%26#39;t be beat...especially when the muscles were playing volleyball.
